0DTE Options Explained: Mechanics Before Momentum

A 0DTE option expires today. Its price can change extremely quickly because little time remains and the contract is highly sensitive to the underlying, volatility and positioning. Treat it as a separate instrument, not a faster version of an ordinary stock trade.

01

Time is part of the position

A correct directional idea can still lose when the move arrives too slowly, implied volatility falls or the selected strike remains out of the money. The expiration clock cannot be paused.

02

Size from the planned loss

Choose the maximum dollar loss first. Do not size from the possible payout or someone else’s screenshot. Wide bid/ask spreads and fast markets can make actual exits worse than a chart suggests.

03

Use an underlying invalidation

Define the SPX, SPY or QQQ price that proves the setup wrong and a time-based exit if the move does not develop. The option premium alone is often too noisy to serve as the thesis.
